Next hike: Spotorno, monte Mao and views over Bergeggi (and a sea cave!)

Spotorno-Noli

Once again a hike in the Riviera di Ponente, and myself as your guide in place of Andy 🙂

The hike will be on Saturday (April, 22), since the weather is expected cloudy on Sunday.

This time we will hike along a brand new route for the Group, a trail never threaded before!

We will set off from Spotorno train station and gain altitude up to the ridge of the mountain from which we will enjoy a beautiful view over the island of Bergeggi to the east, and capo Noli to the west. After going past the paraglider take-off point, we will reach the summit of monte Mao, at 440 m. Then, we will start our descent to Bergeggi, eventually getting back to Spotorno. Will the bravest ones have their first swim of the season? 🙂

This hike is rated as medium/easy. You can see the itinerary details here: https://it.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=15376103

Edit: we’ll also venture to the sea cave of Punta Predani, the most famous sea cave in Liguria (thanks Andy for the tip!) 😉

Meeting point is Spotorno-Noli train station, at 11:20.

Here are the trains to get there:

R 24562 Genova Brignole (9:55) Genova Piazza Principe (10:03) arriving at Spotorno-Noli at 11:17

IC 1533 Milano Centrale (8:10) Genova Piazza Principe (9:44) then take the R 24562 to Spotorno-Noli

Return will be from Spotorno-Noli as well, so you might want to buy a return ticked in advance to avoid any hassle buying the ticket there (possibly we will catch the 17:21 train, or maybe the 19:21, for those who want to linger on the beach).

Also, remember to bring food & water with you, there will be no places to get them on the way.

Sunday, June 12th 2016:

Spotorno-Noli

Hi all!

Tradition has it that, when it comes to organizing a hike in the Riviera di Ponente (western Riviera), I take the lead from Andy 🙂

This time our walk will start from Spotorno. After an easy stretch across the hill dominated by the castle of Monte Ursino, we will reach Noli, one of the five ancient Marine Republics of Italy, where we’ll stroll through the picturesque alleys of its old town. Then, we will take the trail that leads to Capo Noli, walking through olive groves and gaining height over the cliffs.

We will have a short detour, leading us to the grotta dei Falsari, the cavern of the Counterfeiters – also known as cave of Brigands – which is not actually a cavern, but rather a rocky hollow overlooking the sea with a spectacular semi-circular opening of 25 meters in diameter. This cave was created by the water and then shaped by the sea; today it stands 100 meters above sea level. This cavern will be our lunch spot.

After reaching Capo Noli (280 m), the highest point of our hike, we will head down to Varigotti, following a path over the cliffs. Along the trail the view over the coastline is marvelous, spanning, on clear days, from Tuscany to the island of Corsica. The bay below, the Bay of the Saracens, is considered one of the best places to have a swim in Liguria.

Then, we will descend through the promontory of Punta Crena down to Varigotti, a picturesque fishing village, the “surprise of the Riviera di Ponente”! All the villages look similar with the exception of Varigotti, no surprise that episodes of Diabolik and even Donald Duck were set in Varigotti. There, we can relax at the beach before taking the bus to Finale Ligure train station.

Return will be from Finale Ligure (around 6 pm). I recommend buying also the return ticket to avoid any hassle, should we have to run to catch the train.

The total distance covered will be around 10 km, with a vertical gain of 280 m. The path is medium-easy.

Meeting point: Spotorno-Noli train station at 11:45

Trains from Genova:
R 34768 Genova Brignole 10:03
R 1758 Savona 11:39 (arriving to Spotorno-Noli at 11:47)

Trains from Milano Garibaldi:
R 1759 8:46 (magically becomes R 1758 after Genova)
08:46 Milano Porta Garibaldi
08:56 08:58 Milano Lambrate
09:09 09:11 Milano Rogoredo
09:29 09:38 Pavia
11:47 Spotorno-Noli

Next hike – Magic views over the Ligurian sea: mount Reixa

Saturday, November 8, 2014

Hi all!

After so many days of rain, we will finally enjoy a sunny Saturday!
So, what about reaching the summit of mount Reixa (pronounced “Reisha”) from which you can enjoy one of the most spectacular view of Genova and the entire Ligurian gulf?

The path is quite easy, but the elevation gain is 1100 metres, slightly demanding, but feasible. Anyway the view from up there (1183 m) will repay all the effort! 🙂

Estimated duration of the hike is 6 hours.

Watch out: due to the possible wind, perceived temperature along the path might be low, so bring with you also warm items of clothing, including gloves and a hat.

Remember also to bring food and water with you.

Meeting point: Arenzano train station, 10:30 a.m.

Train from Genova: R 24546, stops:

Genova Brignole 9:45
Genova Principe 9:53
Sampierdarena 10:00
Genova Pegli 10:12
Arenzano 10:26

PS I will get on the train in Sampierdarena. As usual, try to find a place in the front car of the train.
