next hike

Saturday, 30th September 2017

Summer may have waved goodbye but, as the sea is still swimmable, shall we remain on the coast and have one last hike&swim? So far, the weather forecast seems favourable, the sea will be much quieter than 2 weeks ago, plus there will even be the Madonna del Rosario festival, taking place in Bonassola. The festival ( ) is a visual treat, since it involves candles on the sea and a firework show, and usually is not so crowded, so it should be possible to comfortably watch it from the beach.

The idea is to meetup, shortly after 11am, at the train station of Levanto: from there we’ll take the panoramic path to Bonassola, via Scernio. From the church of San Giorgio, we’ll head north to the hamlet of Reggimonti, whose we’ll find an old church containing the Madonna del Rosario, that the festival pays tribute to.
We’ll then head south to Bonassola, via the Hop of the Hare lookout point. Should we have time, we can also take the small detour to the green/red beach of Sca, so as to improve the swimming experience.

Total hiking time is approx 3,5 hours (plus half an hour, if we head down to Sca), vertical gain is around 300 metres, trail is rated as T/E (although the descent to Sca is E/EE as it’s steep and even features a rope. However, it’s not dangerous at all).

By 5-6pm we’ll likely be in Bonassola, in time for the festival ( )

Next hike – A world premiere: Camogli to S.Fruttuoso via Passo del Bacio

Sunday 17, September

Hi all!

Sunday is expected to be sunny in Liguria, so why not resume our hikes? 🙂

The path that leads from San Rocco to San Fruttuoso passing through the scenic Passo del Bacio is by far the most spectacular among all of Portofino trails!

Yet, we’ve never taken the group along this beautiful route since some stretches are rated as “for expert hikers”, having slightly exposed passages. Don’t worry, though, because there are chains to hold on to! Many of which being totally unnecessary.

This is THE trail suggested in The Rough Guide to Italy, so why keep on depriving ourselves of such an amazing path?

Only those who are truly scared of heights might want to skip this hike. And please, do not show up wearing flip flops, because this time it might turn out to be a very bad call…

Here is the route: (only the first 7 km)

Meeting point will be in front of Camogli train station, at 11:00.To go back to Camogli we will have several options to pick from, including a boat ride, highly recommended to those who still haven’t enjoyed this experience.

Here are the trains to get there:

IC 35833 Milano Centrale 8:10 > Genova Brignole 9:44

R 24529 Genova Brignole 10:20 > Camogli-S.Fruttuoso 10:59

Return will be from Camogli as well, so you might want to purchase your return ticket in advance and avoid any hassle.

Hiking in Zoagli, along old watermills and bell towers

Sunday, 3rd September 2017:

Is anyone up for having a twin hike this weekend? According to the mayor of Zoagli, the newly restored trails of Zoagli are possibly even more beautiful than those in Cinque Terre, since they offer more variety and better paving. As this is the last week where the so called “Treno del Mare” will connect Milano to Liguria, shall we find out this Sunday if the statement is true? The idea is to hike along the bell-tower trail, from Zoagli to Passo dell’Anchetta across the castle of Sam Benelli and the churches of St Peter and Semorile, and walk back along the mysterious “Giro della Barca”, that follows a stream and features some ancient water-mills.

Trail is easy/medium, has a vertical gain of 500 metres and should take around 3 hours, thus leaving us with plenty of time for swimming (possibly as far as to the cave of the priests)

You may read more about the hike on: (in scary English)
