S.Margherita Ligure

Once again, it’s that time of the year when Camogli celebrates St.Fortunato, by offering a sizzling show on Saturday and fried fish on Sunday. Since the visually entertaining bits are all on Saturday, let’s pick it as hiking day. Two big statues, made of wooden junk, will be brought to the shore and burnt at the stake. There will be a procession, with people carrying the ark of S.Fortunato across town… and plenty of fireworks (otherwise it wouldn’t be a Ligurian festival!).

As for the hike, I propose walking from S.Margherita Ligure to Camogli, via Frate and Porcile, as it would allow us to discover two less beaten trails (Pietre Strette-Porcile and Frate-Bocche) as well as enough lookout points (at Gave, Bocche and the Rock of the Hawks). Also, at the start of the hike we should also be able to see the red carpet that made the headlines 10 days ago, as it was laid from Rapallo to Portofino and, with 8km of length, is now supposedly the longest carpet in the world.

Once we reach “Paradiso”, we can choose between walking to Camogli via Ruta or S.Rocco. Will the sea be warm enough to have a swim? Maybe not, but we can keep an eye on the sea temperature and decide later!

Overall, hike should take around 3,5 hours, has 500 mt of vertical gain and is rated as T/E (easy/medium).

Return will be from Camogli. We’ll probably arrive there around 5pm. Needless to say, if you plan to watch the fireworks and the burning of the statues, you might want to stay until 11pm or midnight.

  1. This hike and outing looks really great. You said to message you 2 weeks before I arrive in Sestri Levante 25th to 27th May in case there is the possibility of a hike I could join. Thanks Gail
Do the group have a Facebook page?

    • Hello Gail,
To avoid any confusion, there’s two of us here as blog admin (and hike organizers): Andy (Liguriah, who replied to you earlier today) and myself (Lukeliguriah). Andy is going to organize a hike on Sunday 28, I’m organizing an extra hike on Saturday 27 in order for you to hike with us.
Of course, should the weather be bad on Sunday, there will be one hike on Saturday only.
Just to be on the safe side: when are you leaving? Sunday hopefully, because you will be back to Sestri Levante not before dinner time if you join our hike.
      Cheers, Luca

      • Well thank you so so much Luca. That is very exciting. I am leaving early on Sunday morning so am completely available all of Saturday. I am very sad to be missing the focaccia di Recco sagra, now that I know about it. BUT your message about the Saturday hike has me smiling from ear to ear and so excited to explore the trail you are organising. I plan on doing the one you’re doing on the 13th on my own anyway. It sounds like it’s worth it. And I shall visit Recco too. Thanks for all the input.
