If you haven’t made plans for the upcoming long weekend yet, would you be up for a classical “Chiavari-Montallegro” hike on Sunday?

As the weather is quite uncertain (some websites predict sunshine, others foresee clouds with rain), this is a hike that should fit all possibilities. In fact, there are several trails leading from Chiavari to Montallegro, some run inside the woods, while others follow the coast.

As for the Montallegro church, legend has it that, on July 2nd 1557, the Virgin Mary appeared in front of a weary peasant and handed him a Byzantine portrait.

Rumours about the miracle quickly spread, so a church was built soon and the Byzantine portrait has been kept there ever since. Twice it got taken away, and twice it magically disappeared, only to reappear on its own in the church of Montallegro.

Goal for this Sunday is to retrace the peasant’s footsteps and have a hike on the Montallegro mountain. We’ll likely follow the trail described on http://www.portofinotrek.com/trek/trekking-da-rapallo/89-rapallo-montallegro-chiavari.html (we’ll start from Chiavari and end in Montallegro, where we’ll be able to comfortably head down by taking the only cableway in Liguria)

Hike is rated as T/E, has a vertical gain of 600 mt and takes around 3 hours.

Return from Rapallo will be around 5:30pm. Or later, if you prefer.

Let’s meet at the entrance of Chiavari train station at 10:30.
