Sunday September 6th, Joanne speaks:
The sun is due to return Sunday and so I have chosen this date to set off on an epic hike in multiple stages, Chiavari – Siena. If anyone would like to join me on the first stage of the hike, they can meet me at the train station in Lavagna and we can hike through olive groves up to Santa Giulia (254 m), where we will have spectacular views of the coast, then on through the woods to Monte Capenardo (656 m) and along the ridge, past the old slate quarries, to the ruins of the church of Sant’Anna, ending up with a swim and aperitivo on the beach in Sestri Levante. (I propose Luna Blu beach as our final destination as it is close to our arrival point in Sestri Levante and the owners of the bar are English-speaking friends of mine who are thinking of joining the group this winter when the beach season is over!)
The trail has an elevation gain of about 700 metres, a total length of 14 km and takes about 4 – 5 hours. The last part follows a mountain bike trail, so you have to keep your ears open for mountain bikers coming down the hill behind you at top speed!
If you would like a preview, here are my photos from the last time I walked it: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153070916203807.1073741973.599753806&type=1&l=bec2898a86

How to get to Lavagna, and how to come back alive:
Let’s meet at the entrance to Lavagna train station at 11:30
If you are travelling eastwards: take the Treno del Mare at 10:32, arriving in Lavagna at 11:22
If you travel westwards: the 10:39 out of La Spezia does not stop in Lavagna, but you can stay on until the next station, Chiavari, where you will arrive at 11:11, and then take the Treno del Mare back to Lavagna at 11:19.
From Milano: Treno del Mare 8:25 arriving in Lavagna at 11:22
I suggest everyone meet up in the front car of the Treno del Mare. I will meet you at the station in Lavagna as I can walk there from home 😉
At 18:02 you can get the return Treno del Mare to Genova or Milano, and there are three more trains to Genova within the next hour after that one if anyone wants to linger longer over their aperitivo!
If you have any doubts, you may write to me on Facebook or call me at 348-553-2563, and I may or may not be able to answer your questions!
